Can Gold Leaf get wet
Gold leaf can get wet, but how it reacts depends on the type of gold leaf and its application:
- Pure Gold Leaf:
- Made of nearly 24-karat gold, pure gold leaf is resistant to water and will not tarnish or degrade when wet. This is because gold is a noble metal, highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation.
- If applied to a surface with proper adhesive (e.g., gilding size), it will generally remain intact when exposed to moisture.
- Imitation Gold Leaf:
- Often made of brass or other alloys, imitation gold leaf is not water-resistant. It can tarnish, corrode, or degrade when exposed to water unless sealed with a protective coating like varnish or lacquer.
- Surface Preparation:
- If gold leaf is applied to a porous or unsealed surface, water can seep under the leaf, potentially lifting or damaging it.
- Sealed vs. Unsealed:
- Sealed gold leaf (whether pure or imitation) has a protective coating that helps prevent damage from water, handling, or environmental exposure.
- Unsealed gold leaf is more vulnerable, especially if it’s imitation leaf.
To ensure longevity and protection, especially in environments with potential moisture exposure, sealing the gold leaf after application is recommended.
